WHALE WATCHING / SHARK DIVING
For a really special and memorable experience, a boat-or landbased whale watching excursion or a thrilling shark cage-dive is an absolute must! Various operators can be found offering these along the Cape South Coast. Read further for more detailed information.
Whale-watching
The giant of the sea, the Southern Right Whale journeys around the world all year round. During the months from about September to December, during our Spring, we have the privilege of hosting them in our waters where they mate, calve and rear their young.
Watch in wonder as these gentle creatures interact and play with one another, up close either from land (they come that close!) or even better, from a boat!
Found predominantly around Walker Bay at Hermanus in the Overberg just 2hours from Cape Town, this is an excellent add-on to any trip.
They also journey further east towards Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route. We know a few reputable operators that offer boat-based whale watching excursions.
Alternatively, there are a few guesthouses and hotels where you can literally watch them from your bed!

Shark Cage Diving
The undisputed lord of the deep, the Great White Shark is another inhabitant of our waters, from the Cape up to Kwazulu Natal.
Best seen during the winter months (from about May - August) when they frequent the seal populated islands off the coast to breed and feed, you may even get to see them breach right out of the water! However they are not seasonal like whales and can be seen all year round.
Most operators now have 3-6 man cages which are submerged alongside the boat from which you have the added advantage of observing these fascinating albeit scary creatures underwater.
But if you are not inclined to underwater shark viewing you can also watch from the deck where you have a great vantage point above the water.
