Imagine slowly moving, magical scenery, 24 hour impeccable service, haute cuisine, first-class wines and spirits in the sumptuous setting of an exclusive train journey across the landscapes. South Africa is blessed with two of the world.s most luxurious trains: Rovos Rail offers a romantic, intimate rail experience with a classy Colonial feel and steam-powered locomotives, whist the famous Blue Train is an upmarket and more modern take on a similar experience but also with steam-powered engines. Both offer journeys to various destinations within our borders as well as other neighbouring countries. Across the border in Namibia is the fabulous Desert Express, another incredible and unmissable journey across the deserts!
Rovos Rail
Known as the Most Luxurious Train in the World., it's not hard to see why. Step aboard wood-panelled and lovingly restored coaches into a bygone era of romance and splendour. Exquisite features and bronze fittings polished to a glimmering sheen surround you as you dine on fine cuisine and sip top wines served by exceptionally trained staff. There are three cabin types to choose from, ranging from the smaller Pullman suites to the 16m² Royal Suites, each complete with private en-suite bathrooms. Routes offered include the popular Cape Town to Pretoria (v.v) 2-night journey, Pretoria to Durban (v.v), overnight Cape Town to George, as well as the epic Cape Town to Dar-Es-Salaam 13 day journey which travels through Zimbabwe at Victoria Falls and Zambia, stopping at various locations en-route.
The Blue Train
Elegant, stylish, comfortable and luxurious, The Blue Train is synonymous to a moving five-star hotel. Recently undergone a soft refurb, the train is beautifully crafted yet offers all the modern conveniences such as television sets in the suites, air-conditioning and even underfloor heating! The suites are all en-suite with showers in the smaller cabins and baths in the larger ones. All are fitted with 100% percale cotton linen, goose-down duvets and pillows. You'll never want to leave your room! But soon enough you will be tempted by the delicious cuisine and of course the passing scenery from the elegant lounge car. Their scheduled route is the overnight Pretoria . Cape Town route (or vice versa) which includes a stop at the historical little town of Matjiesfontein.
Desert Express
Perhaps not as classy and exclusive as the others, this is a special and unique rail experience you won't find anywhere else in the world. The twice-weekly service from Windhoek, Namibia to the coastal town of Swakopmund (or vice versa) travels overnight through some dramatic scenery of vast plains and desert dunes. A couple of scheduled stops en route include a game drive and a dune walk. The fully air-conditioned compartments have large windows and convert into bedrooms at night, whilst meals are taken in the dining car.
